The HVAC industry, formally termed the heating, ventilation, and cooling industry, is expanding rapidly. Since it began in its modern form with the invention of air conditioning, it has been the subject of approbation by many notable figures. “The greatest contribution to civilization in this century,” proclaimed British scholar S.F. Markham in 1947, “may well be air conditioning– and America leads the way.”

Things started to heat up with the invention of the radiator, appropriately invented in chilly St. Petersburg by a Polish born businessman named Franz San Galli in the 1850s. Since the inception of these major inventions, heating and cooling services have existed out of necessity. Repair and maintenance of heating and cooling systems has remained a task best suited to professionals, though the work itself has continued to change dramatically along with the technology.

Today, nearly half of the average household’s energy bill is dedicated to heating and cooling, and the craze isn’t confined to the U.S. China and India are seeing growth in air conditioning sales at a rate of 20% a year, and sales increased 13% between 2010 and 2011. As central heating and cooling systems continue to gain popularity, especially in the U.S., heating and cooling companies have seen major upswings in their customer bases.

Central heating and cooling systems, though far simpler to control in the home, are much more complicated to maintain and repair. As such, HVAC specialists are in high demand, especially at the beginnings of summer and winter when their services are most critical. Some opt not to invest in central heating and cooling systems because of added costs, however there are a few ways to save.

  • Have your system services during the off seasons, spring and fall, to avoid peak season prices.
  • Don’t neglect annual maintenance. It might cost more up front, but saves on repairs in the long run.
  • Know your limits. Most repairs are best performed by a professional and could cause further damage if done inappropriately.
  • Be aware of the amount of energy you’re using. It’s recommended that air conditioners be set at 78 degrees Farenheit for optimum cooling and energy savings.

Modern heating and cooling systems are most certainly a benefit to life in the 21st century. However, they must be adequately services on a regular basis in order to function optimally. Make sure you schedule necessary repairs and maintenance, and your heating and cooling system will last you for years. Good references here.
