Industrial generators use industrial engines that can put out a great deal of power to run an entire office building if need be. The amount of food cost lost even after just a few hours of no power could make the price of a generator worth it.
Then there is the residential generator. This can be a tiny unit, or can be big enough to act as a whole home generator. These work best for times when it is known that power will not be back on any time soon. If it is just a little thunder storm and the lights go out, but you expect them to be back on within a few hours, it is best to hold off on the generator. Take a nap. Enjoy the quiet. But if you live someplace like Tornado Alley, you may want to acquire one of these. If you are at risk of losing power for days at a time, if you are on the hurricane coast, it can be a worthwhile investment. Or if you live far enough out in the snow covered wilds that, even if your power outage is just a simple fix, the repairmen will not get to you for days, having back up power could literally be the difference between life and death.
